The beautiful ache written by Vismaya Kumaran

I recently had the pleasure of reading a poem ‘The beautiful ache’, which is published in Prathibhavam online periodical, written by Ms. Vismaya Kumaran, a student. I was impressed by how beautifully she portrayed the emotions of love. The imagery in her lines is fragrant and vivid. She maturely recognizes that love isn’t solely about physical closeness, but about the deep connection between minds.

Her poem starts with a striking insight: “I do not need your hand in mine, nor the weight of your warmth beside me. Love is not measured in touch or time, but in the space where longing sets us free.” This line showcases her remarkable maturity – truly a case of “a mature head on young shoulders.” Her thoughtful perspective is impressive for someone so young and will undoubtedly serve her well in her poetic journey.

She further explores this theme, writing: “Once you drift away like a crown shyness, the root of obsession will travel through the nerves, creating a beautiful ache.” The phrase “crown shyness” – a natural phenomenon where trees maintain a gap between their canopies – shows her profound knowledge.

She continues, “You’re not in the whispering wind, yet every breeze carries your name. Not in the footprints beside my own, yet I walk as if you remain.” These lines beautifully capture the longing and presence of a loved one, even in their physical absence.
The imagery is poignant, and the emotions are palpable. Her words evoke a sense of yearning that crosses physical boundaries.

The following lines beautifully convey the depth of her connection: “I will not search for you in a form; because it’s still and ever, the only one indelible portrait of you, which is sketched by nature only for my eyes.” This suggests that his image is deeply etched in her soul, a masterpiece crafted by nature, visible only to her. The phrase “indelible portrait” implies a lasting impression that is beyond physical appearances

Her ability to weave this concept into her poetry, highlighting the intricate dynamics of love and longing, is truly exceptional—a testimony to her innovative thinking and poetic skill. Given that this is her first published poem, Ms. Vismaya deserves immense praise for her remarkable maturity and skill.

Reflecting on my own early attempts at poetry, I recall a piece I wrote in college titled “A Reverie.” Compared to her sophisticated work, mine seems almost simplistic. Nonetheless, it’s heartening to see young talent like hers flourishing in the world of poetry. I’d like to congratulate Vismaya (the name meaning “amazement” in Malayalam, which suits her perfectly) and wish her an illustrious career in the world of English poetry.
